Harrison, Cindy, Dean, Emerson, Gary, Rick & JimmyV. In Livingston, CA

We started day two at four in the morning in Springfield Oregon the goal was to get past Redding, California which was supposed to have a temperature of 114°F. We did pretty good riding down to Livingston, California.

Gary and I grew up 4 miles from Livingston. Our farm was in Cressey, California. We both attended the local high school. We were able to contact my cousin’s who still live in the area to join us for dinner.

Blaine WA Corner #1 Done

June 25, Day 1

US/Canadian Peace Arch – Team 60’s & Team 70’s on the US side. No one was at the site. Neat place. Inside the highly secure arch there’s a sign that says “These gates shall never close.”
Blaine WA Peace Arch … done! Gary poses the required photo … flag #014, motorcycle and local landmark.
As we depart Gary is stopped and as he starts moving in a tight turn he loses his balance and over he goes! Rick and I have him back on 2-wheels in seconds.
We were looking to see if we can get a photo of our flag & motorcycle in front of the Peace Arch but that is physically impossible. The next best option is the Peace Arch State Park entry sign.
Besides the photo we also need a computer printed gas receipt with the date time and location must be in the city of that corner so this receipt has Blaine WA.

The final proof of being at the corner is the mileage of your motorcycle at that specific location and this is documented on a form with name, location, OD mileage and date.

Riding Teams

Friday, June 25, 2021

It seems we have two established teams.

Team 70’s is ready to ride with embroidered USA Four Corners caps and flags.

Team 70’s, my brother Gary and I – Older, refined, knowledgeable, farm boy common-sense educated, good-looking, married gentlemen of high esteem, and …

Team 60’s style is more down and dirty!  Their stenciled flags with iron-on numbers and NO official caps reflect their limited status.

Team 60’s, riff-raff JimmyV and Rick – Younger, flashier, whipper-snapping, suave, clean motos, chrome-gleaming, thundering Harley big twin-V single dudes.

The 2019 USA Four Corners flags vs. the 2021 flags

On paper, this looks like a bad combination.  Sue, my wife, always gives me that look of concern whenever I tell her I’m going on a ride with JimmyV.  After 30+ years of friendship with JimmyV (which includes our 1997 USA Four Corners) she still gives me that look.

Team 60’s just arrived!  The party has started.

More pre-Four Corners thoughts

Day -1, Thur, June 24

I apologize for my early absence from the 4corners blog. My travels north were pretty much family visits. I didn’t want to bore everyone with non-riding stuff.

Ever changing technology

I’m learning the new, upgraded WordPress and all it’s nuances.  The idea of posting from an iPhone is amazing and convent.  But it’s somewhat cumbersome entering data with 1 finger for lengthy posts!  I still have a laptop because of the need for Garmin Basecamp and GPS routing.  Tonight JimmyV will show me how to post photos!

2021 Iron Butt Rally

Some of you are aware of my past motorcycle adventures. I’ve been a member of the Iron Butt Association since 2000 and have participated in the 2001, 2003 and 2005 Iron Butt Rally. I’ve mentioned this before but it’s worth reminding other riders, this is the famous motorcycle long-distance rally that competitors safely and strategically ride 1,000 miles a day for 11 days! While many hundreds apply only to top 100 riders are selected!

The 2021 Iron Butt Rally is running concurrent to our wonderings. It started in Provo, UT last Monday at 10 AM. Competitors scattered the four corners for bonuses as they ride to the 1st checkpoint in Indianapolis, IN. The 1st checkpoint window is today Thursday, June 24, 8pm – 10pm. Checkpoint 2 is in Alabama Sunday June 27. The rally ends July 2 back in Provo UT! It is not uncommon for the winner to ride 12,000 miles in the 11-day competition.

On our leg 2, San Ysidro CA to Key West FL I expect to see a few IBR competitors hunting for bonuses. Safe travels to all endurance competitors, I remember the amazing highs in achieving difficult bonuses and catastrophic lows in erroring during a bonus documentation. Truly, competing in the Iron Butt Rally is a life changing experience!

Baby steps in 103℉ heat

Our group of 4 USA Four Corners riders will start with Blaine WA as our 1st corner. Three of us, JimmyV, Rick and I live in Orange County CA, my brother Dennis Gary lives on Camano Island WA. The three OC riders will ride ~1,500 mi to start the USA Four Corners Tour at Blaine WA!

My brother has two names …. Dennis is his 1st name and Gary is his middle name. He grew up Gary through school and college but became Dennis after he was drafted into the army where first names were required! He’s going to be Gary in this blog.

I’m departing early to visit family along the way.  JimmyV and Rick will meander north via 395 meeting Gary and I Thursday, June 24 on Camano Island WA.

So, over the last 5 days I’ve ridden the following:

Fri, Jun 18  – Orange County CA to Atwater CA, 336 mi, stopped to visit family.  This first day out was due north on I-5 up the San Joaquin Valley.  It was into a blast furnace!  102℉ beat me up pretty good.  I carry a 1-gal wide-mouth water jug with ice water with long drinking hose.  What a life saver!  I also stopped several times just to get out of the heat and into a cool refrig fast food dining room.

Sat, Sun, Jun 19-20 – Atwater CA to Leavenworth WA, 863 mi, visiting family.  This was going to be a test after a year of doing nothing!  I plan on riding north being very careful of the heat.  I started at 4AMand planned to ride carefully with lots of water and cooling stops.  At Weed CA the temp were warm but comfortable.  I-97 N took me through Klamath Falls, Bend, Madras, 4th Shaniko, Moro OR.  At Biggs I crossed over the Columbia River into WA.  Still on I-97 N I rode through Toppenish, Yakima, Ellensburg to Leavenworth WA.

Mon, Jun 21 – Leavenworth WA to Ellensburg WA, 56 mi, visiting family

Tue, Wed, Jun 22 – Ellensburg WA to Issaquah WA, 96 mi, visiting family

Wed, Jun 23 – Issaquah WA to Camano Island WA, 97 mi, arriving at Gary’s residence.

I fixed a loose RAM mount-ball holding my left mirror.  It wouldn’t lock tight so I Red Loctited the screw.  Hopefully the mirror will stay in position.  Checked the chain tension, and silicon spray lubed the chain.

Tomorrow JimmyV and Rick will join us. The four amigos will rest, do minor repairs/service, test our SENA intercoms, discuss our procedures, and prepare for Friday, June 25 departure to the 1st corner … Blaine WA. We’re hoping to be at the Peace Arch around 8:30 AM.
