Day 12 Summary Video Duluth GA to Asheville NC

Day 12 Summary Video Duluth GA to Asheville NC

As luck would have it, in the mid morning Rick and I went to visit a high school friend of mine, Kathy and her husband Erics. We were treated to a quick excursion on their newly acquired pontoon boat for their neighbor lake adventures. Thanks Kat & Erics for the visit!

After the lovely morning we departed at noon to catch up with Team 70s and headed to The Tail of the Dragon loop along with another suggested loops.

The riding out here is amazing! Tons of great country roads winding roads into small towns with great people. I must come back.

It was 6 pm when we finished riding the tail there and back and it was time to head to Asheville before it gets dark. We did it and arrived about 8:30 and had a room ready thanks to team 70s

We are still monitoring Elsa and trying to determine our options…

Day 11 Video Summary – Homestead FL to Duluth GA

Day 11 Video Summary Homestead FL to Duluth GA

We are trying to keep ahead of Elsa, so we decide to do a big day ride north and try to get as far north towards Georgia with weather permitting.

We want to do the Tail of the Dragon in TN and I would like to visit a high school friend in The Atlanta area. So the two teams split, with 60s team trying to get as close to Georgia as possible to have a longer chance for a visit.

Team 70s leaves at 3:45 am, team 60s at around 5:30 am. The morning provide both teams with a great lighting show east, but it was dry when we started which was great.

Somehow, team 60s passes team 70s during the morning probably during gas stops. Team 60s pushes to Duluth GA while team 70s make it to Perry GA. Both teams will hook up sometime on the next day, either on the trail on at the agreed town to stop for the night, which is Asheville

Doing these longer days has made our postings late…

Day 9, Sat, July 3-Chiefland FL to Homestead FL

The push to Key West … before tropical storm Elie hits

Nine days ago we had no idea of a tropical storm called Ellie! Now it’s the center of our attention, concentration and discussions. We daily watch the weather channel, and track the intensity and schedule of the storm on our iPhones.

Today’s ride is approximately 400 miles. Like the day before Team-70s left at 5am and Team-60s left around 6am. Team 70s took the interstate South and Team-60s took surface streets. Seeing dark clouds ahead Gary wanted to stop at the next rest stop to put on rain gear. In comparing GPS routes we noticed that there was a mileage and route difference to the same motel in Homestead. Back on the interstate south we ran into heavy heavy rain within 15 minutes. Then we ran into a series of traffic jams that really slowed us down.

We jump off the interstate and reroute to 27. It’s 65 max with traffic lights in each town.

At the end of today we plan to position ourselves in a motel in Homestead FL. Homestead is approximately 120 miles to Key West.

We plan to leave tomorrow early, arrive at Key West post haste, do our photo and documentation and get back to Homestead.  At this point we’re 24 hours ahead of Elsa.
