Motel Home to Santa Monica Pier – 56 miles

We depart Motel Home around 5:15AM.  Its 53 miles via I-405 to the intersection of Olympic Blvd & Lincoln Blvd.  The early morning traffic into Los Angeles is heavy!  It started backing up near Gardena.

Gary next to the “END of Historic Route 66” sign on the south west corner of Lincoln Blvd and Olympic Blvd.  The Western Terminus of Route 66 from 1936 to 1964 was located on the intersection of Lincoln Blvd. with Olympic Blvd.

Across the street is Mel’s Drive-In.  This location was the former Penguin Coffee Shop, 1959.  It then became the Western Dental & Orthodontics retaining the Penguin atop the sign.  Recently, Mel’s Drive-In has taken over the building and again the Penguin sits atop the sign.  Mel’s Drive-In has claimed ownership of End of the Road.

Gary’s very thankful that the Historic Route 66 Tour is OVER! He immediately heads north back home. He’ll spend the night somewhere past Redding, CA.

It was a wonderful “brother experience” to share! As we found out in our old age we have similar likes and dislikes.

I climbed the BEGIN sign in Chicago. Gary climbs the “End of the Trail” sign on the pier.

Historic Route 66 … DONE!  Completed at 7:37 AM

Great write ups on Route 66 guys, what a great way to end the ride!

  2. What a wonderful trip! Thanks for sharing it with all of us. Thanks for stopping in at Villa Milagro Vineyards to visit us. AND thanks for letting Steve ride with you for awhile – though it is making if difficult to remind him that peddling a bike is healthier than sitting on one!!! What a joy it was to see you both and to meet Jimmy & Rick. You are all always welcome to stop in for great food and wine at our hacienda!
    Hugs & love – Audrey & Steve

Congratulations!! Wow, what an accomplishment! Happy faces at the end of the trail sign!
What will us followers do now? It’s been truly exciting and enjoyable to follow you.
How about a trip to Alaska?? Ha!
We still get to follow Rick and Jimmy.

Congratulations! I, too, have enjoyed following your trip. Thanks for all the history and pics of Route 66!! Safe home, Gary!!

My obsession with the blog is only slightly diminished since Jim arrived…I still check up on Tracks and since Rick departed, Jimmy shares his location/ride with me. Now that you’re home, I have a couple days before Jim departs and I’ll be back checking his location every hour and waiting for a post.😂
