The push to Key West … before tropical storm Elie hits
Nine days ago we had no idea of a tropical storm called Ellie! Now it’s the center of our attention, concentration and discussions. We daily watch the weather channel, and track the intensity and schedule of the storm on our iPhones.
Today’s ride is approximately 400 miles. Like the day before Team-70s left at 5am and Team-60s left around 6am. Team 70s took the interstate South and Team-60s took surface streets. Seeing dark clouds ahead Gary wanted to stop at the next rest stop to put on rain gear. In comparing GPS routes we noticed that there was a mileage and route difference to the same motel in Homestead. Back on the interstate south we ran into heavy heavy rain within 15 minutes. Then we ran into a series of traffic jams that really slowed us down.
We jump off the interstate and reroute to 27. It’s 65 max with traffic lights in each town.
At the end of today we plan to position ourselves in a motel in Homestead FL. Homestead is approximately 120 miles to Key West.
We plan to leave tomorrow early, arrive at Key West post haste, do our photo and documentation and get back to Homestead. At this point we’re 24 hours ahead of Elsa.
Be safe, Brother-in-law…💙
